THE CYCLE OF TOURISM

Left by the state government, the "paritienses" began a movement to belong again to São Paulo State, waiting for more attention. Despite of having not altered the district jurisdiction, this campaign caused great repercussion in the paulista press, awakening the interest for the city.

At the beginning of the century XX, Lebaneses of the families Salmão,Tabet,Assad,Harb,Capaz,Elias,Afif,Gibraiu and Klink were established in the region buying a lot of lands. In the decade of 1950, with the opening of the road connecting Paraty to Cunha and in the decade of 1970 with the opening of the road BR-101, connecting the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Santos, it began the touristic development of Paraty.

In 1940, the population was approximately of 3570 inhabitants. Twenty years later, the population was approximately of 12085, an increasing of 238,2%. The electrical energy supply up to the middle of 1970 was made by two generator groups summing up 170 HP, and 88% of the 350 consumers were dwellers from the historical center.

Due to the city landmark for cultural reason and the forest surrounding by ecological reasons, Paraty is limited to be expanded. The tourism seems to be its definitive vocation; maybe it can be complemented by other activities of the third party sector as for example the rendering of services in the nautical and artistic area as it occurs.
